What you’ll learn

  • Deliver a memorised one-minute piece with clear expression, varied volume and at least three deliberate pauses
  • Pronounce commonly mispronounced competition words correctly and stress the right syllables
  • Speak for two minutes on a topic given on the spot with an opening hook, two points and a closing line
  • Use three or four gestures that match the words, with still feet and eyes on the audience
  • Recover from a forgotten line or a stage mistake within five seconds without apologising
  • Answer two judges' questions in full sentences and complete a competition round within the time limit

This course is for

Students picked for elocution, recitation or Olympiad speaking rounds. Inter-school elocution, recitation finals and the speaking rounds of English Olympiads are judged on expression, pronunciation, pausing, body language, time and how you handle the judges' questions, not on how many big words you know. This course trains each with a stage coach who plays the judge, the compere and the audience. You learn to deliver a memorised piece with feeling, pause for effect, speak for two minutes on a surprise topic, gesture to fit the words, recover from a forgotten line, and answer judges without freezing. It ends with a full competition round scored on a judges' sheet.
