Interview practice

Mock interview practice online: what a mock interview is, why it works, and how to run one with an AI panel

A mock interview is a practice interview that copies the real one: the same questions, the same time pressure, a panel that interrupts and follows up, and honest feedback at the end. Students use it before campus placements, graduates before IBPS or SBI boards, teachers before KVS demo lessons, and working professionals before a job switch. This guide explains what a mock interview is, why recruiters and placement cells swear by it, how to run one yourself with a friend, and what an AI mock interview does that a friend cannot. It ends with a 7-day plan and how to start a free voice mock on ExamPilot without a card.

What is a mock interview?

A mock interview is a rehearsal of a real interview, conducted before the actual one, under conditions as close to the real thing as you can manage. Someone plays the interviewer or the board, asks the questions that the real panel asks for that job or exam, pushes back on weak answers, and then tells you plainly what worked and what did not. The word mock means imitation, not fake: the questions are real, only the stakes are removed.

  • Mock interview meaning in Hindi: मॉक इंटरव्यू यानी अभ्यास इंटरव्यू, असली interview से पहले उसी तरह के सवालों के साथ की गई rehearsal, जिसमें आपको feedback मिलता है।
  • Mock interview meaning in Tamil: மாக் இன்டர்வியூ என்றால் பயிற்சி நேர்காணல், உண்மையான நேர்காணலுக்கு முன் அதே கேள்விகளுடன் நடத்தப்படும் ஒத்திகை, முடிவில் கருத்து (feedback) கிடைக்கும்.
  • Mock interview in Telugu, Marathi and Kannada carries the same sense: a practice interview, usually called abhyas interview or rehearsal interview in everyday speech.

A mock interview is not the same as reading a list of HR interview questions with answers. Reading tells you what to say. A mock tells you whether you can actually say it, out loud, in 60 seconds, to a stranger who looks unconvinced. Those are different skills, and only the second one is tested in the room.

Why mock interviews work: what placement cells and recruiters see

Every college training and placement cell in India runs mock rounds before the season, and every serious UPSC and SSB coaching centre runs mock boards. They do this for a reason that any recruiter will confirm: most rejections are not for lack of knowledge. They are for answers that ramble, answers that contradict the resume, a self-introduction that runs three minutes, and visible panic at the first follow-up question. None of those faults show up when you prepare silently. All of them show up in a mock.

  • Rehearsal converts knowing into saying. The first time you say your self-introduction out loud is usually bad; the fifth time is fine. Better that the first four happen in a mock.
  • Follow-up questions are where candidates fall. A mock with a live interviewer teaches you to expect why, how, give me an example, and what would you do differently.
  • Timing becomes visible. Most candidates have no idea whether their answer took 40 seconds or 3 minutes until someone times it.
  • Nerves drop with exposure. The second mock is always calmer than the first, and the real interview feels like the fourth.
  • Feedback is specific. You hear that you said basically eleven times, looked at the table when asked about your weakness, and never gave a number in the project answer.

One rule from placement coordinators

Never let your first real interview of the season be the first interview you have given that year. Companies that visit early get the raw version of you; a mock the week before is the cheapest way to give them the polished one.

How to run a mock interview yourself

You do not need a coaching centre. You need a friend, a senior or a family member who can read questions, a phone to record, and the discipline to treat it as real. Here is the format that works.

  1. 1

    Pick the exact interview

Not an interview in general: the TCS HR round, the IBPS PO board, the KVS PGT Physics demo plus interview. Write down the five stages that interview actually has and the time each takes.

  2. 2

    Build a 20-question bank

Ten questions every panel asks (tell me about yourself, why this role, strengths and weaknesses, a failure, where in five years) and ten specific to the job or exam. For bank boards that means repo rate, NPA and a branch situation; for teachers it means NEP 2020 and a classroom scenario.

  3. 3

    Set the room

Sit across a table, in the clothes you will wear, phone on silent and recording. The interviewer does not smile or help. Start with a knock and a may I come in, because the first 30 seconds set the tone in real boards too.

  4. 4

    Ask follow-ups, not just questions

Tell your interviewer: after every answer, ask one why or one give me an example. This is the single thing that separates a useful mock from a quiz.

  5. 5

    Keep to real time

A campus HR round is 10 to 15 minutes; a bank board 15 to 20; a UPSC board 25 to 35. Stop when the time is up, even mid-answer.

  6. 6

    Debrief with the recording

Watch it back together. Note three things to keep and three to fix. Count filler words. Time the self-introduction. Check whether every answer had a specific name, number or place in it.

  7. 7

    Repeat within 48 hours

Fix the three faults and run the same 20 questions again. Improvement between mock one and mock two is where confidence actually comes from.

The weakness of a friend-run mock is honest and predictable: friends go easy, they do not know what an IBPS board or a Big 4 partner actually asks, they cannot do follow-ups on a subject they do not know, and after two rounds nobody has time for a third. That gap is exactly what an AI mock interview is built to close.

What an AI mock interview does differently

An AI mock interview on ExamPilot is a voice conversation, not a form. You speak, the interviewer listens, and it asks the next question based on what you actually said. Here is what changes compared with a friend or a question bank.

What mattersFriend or question bankAI mock interview on ExamPilot
Speaking out loudOnly if you insistAlways voice; you cannot type your way through
Follow-up questionsRare, and only on topics the friend knowsOn every answer: why, how, give an example, what if the customer refuses
Panel formatOne personA 3 to 4 member panel with distinct roles (chair, subject expert, HR) or a 1:1 round
Exam-specific questionsGenericMatched to the board: IBPS, SBI, UPSC, SSB, KVS, campus HR, product, sales, nursing and over 50 other boards
LanguageWhatever the friend speaksEnglish, Hindi, Hinglish and other Indian languages; switch mid-interview like a real board
FeedbackVague and politeA scored report per competency with the exact sentences that cost you marks
AvailabilityWhen the friend is freeAny hour, as many rounds as you want; the third attempt costs nothing extra in effort

The panel is the part that surprises people. A real IBPS board has a chair who asks about your background, a banker who asks about CRR and a situational question, and an HR officer who asks whether you will take a rural posting. ExamPilot runs the same structure: each AI interviewer has a role and a style, they interrupt, they return to a weak answer later, and the report shows which of them you convinced.

After the session you get a report that scores role knowledge, problem solving, communication and attitude, with STAR feedback on each behavioural answer. It quotes you. If you said I am a hard worker and a quick learner with no example, the report marks that line and shows the follow-up you fumbled. That is the feedback a placement cell gives to its top 20 students; here every candidate gets it.

What the AI panel checks when you practise

  • Structure: did the answer have a beginning, one or two specifics and an end, or did it trail off into and that is all about me.
  • Specificity: a place, a number, a subject, a company. I improved the API latency by 40 percent at Zoho beats I worked on performance.
  • Consistency: does what you say match your resume and what you said ten minutes ago. Boards remember; so does the panel.
  • Handling follow-ups: do you answer the question asked, or repeat your prepared answer. Do you say I do not know cleanly when you do not.
  • Pace and fillers: words per minute, long pauses, basically, actually, like, you know.
  • Attitude: honesty about backlogs, gaps and rural postings; no blame on previous employers or teachers; calm under a hostile question.

Tell me about yourself.

I am Aditi Rao, a final-year computer science student at PES University, Bengaluru, with a CGPA of 8.4. My main project is a hostel mess feedback app built in Flutter with a Firebase backend; it has 600 active users in our hostel and cut the mess committee's complaint handling time from a week to two days. I did a two-month internship at a Bengaluru fintech startup where I wrote unit tests and fixed bugs in their KYC flow. Outside class I lead the college coding club, which runs a weekly problem-solving session for 40 juniors. I am looking for a software engineering role where I can work on products that real users touch every day, which is why Infosys's digital services work interests me.

The panel checks for one number, one named project and one reason for this company, all within 60 seconds.

Say this answer out loud

Your project sounds simple. What was actually hard about it?

The hard part was not the code, it was the data. The first version let students rate meals anonymously, and within a week we had abuse and duplicate entries that made the ratings useless. I added college-email login and limited one rating per meal per student, and I changed the dashboard so the mess committee saw trends over a week rather than individual comments. Usage dropped for a few days after login was added, then recovered because the committee started acting on the data. I learnt that a feature people will actually use needs trust built into it, not just a nice interface.

This is the follow-up most students fail. The panel checks whether you can describe a real difficulty and what you changed, without defending the original design.

A 7-day mock interview practice plan

This plan assumes you have about one hour a day and an interview in roughly a week. Adjust the question bank to your exam: campus HR, bank board, teacher panel or job switch. Each day ends with speaking out loud, never only reading.

  1. 1

Day 1: map the interview and record a baseline

Write down the stages, timing and panel of your specific interview. Record yourself answering tell me about yourself and why this role with no preparation. Keep the recording; you will compare it on day 7.

  2. 2

    Day 2: fix the self-introduction

Write a 60-second self-introduction with one project, one number and one reason for this role. Say it ten times standing up. Run a short AI mock and check the report for pace and filler words.

  3. 3

Day 3: the ten universal questions

Strengths, weakness, failure, conflict, five years, why should we hire you, why are you leaving, salary, relocation, questions for us. Prepare one STAR story for each. Speak each answer once to a friend or to the AI interviewer and note which ones got a follow-up you could not handle.

  4. 4

Day 4: the ten domain questions

Bank aspirants: repo rate, CRR, SLR, NPA, digital banking, a customer situation. Teachers: NEP 2020, a classroom scenario, a demo topic. Software: your project, one data structures question, a debugging story. Practise with the matching ExamPilot board so the follow-ups are from your domain.

  5. 5

Day 5: full-length mock, panel format

One complete mock in real time, dressed for it, with a panel rather than a 1:1. Do not stop to restart an answer. Read the report immediately and pick the three lowest-scored items.

  6. 6

    Day 6: repair and repeat

Rewrite the three weak answers. Run the same mock again and compare the two reports side by side. Also do one mock in the language the real board might switch to; bank and government boards often move to Hindi for a question.

  7. 7

Day 7: light run and rest

One short 1:1 mock of the opening five minutes only. Listen to day 1 and day 7 recordings back to back. Lay out documents and clothes. Sleep.

How free mock interview practice works on ExamPilot

You can start a mock interview on ExamPilot free, with no card and no plan to pick first. Sign in with your phone or Google account, choose the exam or job from the interview catalogue, pick a panel or a one-on-one, and the interviewer starts speaking. Every new account comes with free practice minutes, enough for a first full session and a report, so you can judge the feedback before you decide anything.

  • Free minutes are added when you sign up; no card details are asked for.
  • Every session, free or paid, produces the same full scored report.
  • If you want more rounds after the free minutes, you buy minutes in small packs that stay valid for a set period; details are on the pricing page.
  • Sessions run in the browser on a phone or laptop with a microphone; no app download is needed.
  • You can pause and resume a session, and you can replay your own answers next to the panel's follow-ups.

If your interview is a specific board, go straight to its page: IBPS PO interview, SBI PO interview, UPSC interview, SSB interview, KVS and NVS interview or bank interview questions. If your weak spot is spoken English rather than content, start with English speaking practice with AI and come back to the mock in a week.

Mistakes that make a mock interview useless

  • Treating it as a quiz: if there are no follow-ups and no time limit, it is a revision session, not a mock.
  • Restarting answers: in the real room you cannot say wait, let me start again. Do not allow it in the mock either.
  • Reading from notes: a mock with notes measures your reading, not your speaking.
  • Only doing one: the value is in the gap between round one and round two.
  • Ignoring the recording or the report: the debrief is the mock. Twenty minutes of review is worth more than another twenty minutes of talking.
  • Mocking in the wrong language: if the real board may ask in Hindi, do at least one round in Hindi or Hinglish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mock interview in simple words?
A mock interview is a practice interview held before the real one. Someone plays the interviewer, asks the questions the real panel asks for that job or exam, follows up on your answers, and then gives you feedback. The point is to find and fix your weak answers while nothing is at stake, so that the real interview is not the first time you have said them aloud.
Is an AI mock interview as good as a human one?
For most candidates it is more useful, because it is available every day, it never goes easy on you, and it asks follow-ups from the exact exam or job rather than from what a friend happens to know. A human coach is still valuable for reading your body language in a room and for sector gossip. The best preparation uses both: several AI rounds to fix the answers, one human round to check the presence.
Can I do a mock interview online for free?
Yes. ExamPilot gives every new account free practice minutes with no card required, enough for a first full voice session with a scored report. You can choose a 1:1 or a panel, in English, Hindi, Hinglish and other Indian languages, for campus placements, bank boards, UPSC, SSB, teaching and private-sector roles. More rounds after the free minutes are bought in small packs.
How many mock interviews should I do before the real one?
Three to five full rounds in the week before, with a debrief after each, is enough for most interviews. The first round sets a baseline, the second shows what improved, and the later ones should be in the panel format and the language of the real board. More than that with no debrief in between adds little; the gain is in the review, not the repetition.
What questions are asked in a mock interview?
The same questions the real panel asks. Every mock should include tell me about yourself, why this role or company, your strengths and a weakness, a failure, where you see yourself in five years, and why should we hire you. Then add ten questions from your domain: banking awareness and a customer situation for bank boards, NEP 2020 and a classroom scenario for teachers, your project and one fundamentals question for software roles.
What is a mock interview for campus placement?
It is the practice round that a college placement cell, or you yourself, runs before companies visit. It copies the company's HR and technical rounds: a 60-second self-introduction, questions on your final-year project and core subjects, and HR questions on relocation, shifts, backlogs and plans for higher studies. ExamPilot has separate panels for IT services, core engineering, MBA summer placements and internships.
