KVS interview marks: how much the interview counts

The interview cannot rescue a weak written score, but it routinely decides the order among candidates who wrote similar papers. In the 2025-26 recruitment, which CBSE conducted jointly for KVS and NVS, there are three tiers: Tier-1 is a 300-mark screening paper that only qualifies you, Tier-2 is the subject paper on which merit is built, and Tier-3 is the interview, held for 100 marks and combined with a demo lesson for teaching posts. The notification fixes final merit at 85 percent from Tier-2 and 15 percent from the interview for PRT, TGT, PGT, Principal, Vice-Principal and Assistant Commissioner. Read the scheme in your own notification on the KVS exam page and the CBSE notice, because the weightage has changed from cycle to cycle.

KVS NVS interview date 2026: how dates and lists are published

There is no single all-India date. The Tier-2 result goes up first with the roll numbers shortlisted for interview, a post-wise and region-wise schedule follows, and then an interview call letter opens in the candidate login with your venue, date and reporting time. For the 2025-26 cycle the result and letters came through the CBSE examination portal and were linked from kvsangathan.nic.in and navodaya.gov.in under Recruitment, with interviews scheduled from mid-September to mid-October 2026: PGT panels first, then TGT, PRT, and Principal and Vice-Principal. For a later cycle expect the same order and check the official notice for the window.

  1. 1

Watch the result page, not social media

The Tier-2 result PDF lists shortlisted roll numbers. KVS shortlists roughly three to five candidates per vacancy depending on post and subject; the ratio is stated in the result notice.

  2. 2

Download the call letter from the candidate login

Log in with your registration number and date of birth or password. The letter carries your centre, date, session and document list. Print two copies.

  3. 3

Check the subject on your letter

In the 2025-26 cycle some candidates received letters for a neighbouring subject. If the post or subject is wrong, email the helpdesk address on the notice at once with your registration number.

  4. 4

    Know your venue type

PGT interviews are held at zonal centres or large JNVs, TGT at regional panel venues, PRT at regional KVS hubs, Principal and Vice-Principal at KVS headquarters or regional offices. Reach the city a day early.

  5. 5

Expect the result four to eight weeks after the last panel

The final merit list is published post-wise and subject-wise with Tier-2 marks, interview marks and total. Offers and station allotment follow from the regional office.

Documents to carry for verification

Document verification happens on the same day, before you enter the panel room, and a missing paper can cost you the interview. Carry originals and one set of self-attested photocopies of everything you claimed in the application.

  • Printed call letter and the online application printout
  • Photo ID: Aadhaar, PAN, voter card or passport
  • Class 10 certificate for date of birth, Class 12 mark sheet
  • Graduation and post-graduation mark sheets and degrees (PGT needs the Master's in the subject with 50 percent)
  • B.Ed or D.El.Ed or the integrated degree; CTET certificate for PRT and TGT
  • Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS) in the central government format and date range the notice specifies
  • Disability certificate, ex-serviceman papers or other reservation proof you claimed
  • Experience certificates if claimed, especially residential-school experience for NVS
  • Four passport-size photographs matching the application photo

Who sits on the panel: PRT, TGT and PGT boards

A KVS board usually has three to four members: a KVS Principal or Assistant Commissioner in the chair, a subject expert from a university or a senior PGT, an education or pedagogy expert, and sometimes a language member who checks your Hindi and English. The chair opens from your application, the subject expert runs your demo and probes depth, the pedagogy expert asks about assessment, NEP 2020 and classroom situations. The NVS board adds a Regional Officer or an experienced JNV Principal who asks about hostel life, because every NVS teacher is also a house master or house mistress.

PostClassesWhat the board stressesTypical length
PRT (KVS)Classes 1 to 5Foundational literacy and numeracy, play-way and activity methods, Balvatika and Class 1 readiness under NEP 2020, handling parents of small childrenDemo 5 to 7 minutes plus 10 to 15 minutes of questions
TGT (KVS and NVS)Classes 6 to 10NCERT content clarity, periodic assessment and CCA, notebook checking, middle-stage competencies; for NVS the Class 6 entrant from a village schoolDemo 5 to 7 minutes plus 10 to 20 minutes
PGT (KVS and NVS)Classes 11 to 12Board-exam depth, JEE and NEET awareness, lab work, career guidance; for NVS supervised evening studyDemo 7 to 10 minutes plus 15 to 20 minutes

The board is bilingual and switches between Hindi and English without warning; the PRT board often asks you to explain a concept in Hindi for a child who does not yet read English. Answer in the language the question came in. Mixing is fine as long as it sounds like a classroom, not a translation exercise. Interview tips in Hindi covers the switch.

The demo lesson: five minutes that set the mood of the panel

You are told the topic at the venue, usually from the NCERT textbook of the class you will teach, and given a few minutes to think. There are no students; the board members are your class and one of them will play a slow learner or a disruptive child. The board is not checking whether you finish the chapter. It checks whether you state a learning objective, hook the class, explain with an example from the child's world, use the board or a visual, check understanding with a question, and close with a recap inside the time.

  1. 1

Minute 0 to 1: objective and hook

Say what the class will be able to do by the end. Open with a question or an object: a leaf, a Metro card, a cricket score, a measuring tape.

  2. 2

Minute 1 to 4: one concept, one example, one visual

Teach one idea properly rather than three badly. Draw it. Ask a board member to answer as a student and respond to a wrong answer kindly.

  3. 3

Minute 4 to 5: check and close

Ask one exit question that tests the objective, summarise in two sentences, and say what activity or homework would follow.

  4. 4

    Be ready for the interruption

A member will ask a question mid-lesson or play a child who says the topic is boring. Handle it inside the lesson; do not step out of role.

Topics that keep coming up

PRT: place value, shapes, parts of a plant, water cycle, a poem from Rimjhim. TGT: fractions, Newton's laws, photosynthesis, the Delhi Sultanate, a poem from Honeydew, tenses. PGT: integration by parts, Le Chatelier, Mendelian ratios, federalism, the balance sheet, a Hamlet soliloquy. Practise a timed five-minute version of three topics from your own classes.

KVS interview questions with answers: pedagogy and motivation

Tell us about yourself and why you want to join KVS.

I am Priya Sharma from Dehradun. I did my M.Sc. in Chemistry from HNB Garhwal University and B.Ed from DAV College, and for three years I have taught Classes 9 to 12 at a CBSE school in Haridwar, where my Class 12 batch averaged 84 in Chemistry last year. I want KVS because it is the one system where a jawan's child in Leh and a clerk's child in Chennai get the same textbook, the same assessment and the same quality of teacher. I am ready for all-India transfers; my husband is in the Army, so moving is already our life.

Name, qualification, one number that proves you teach well, one genuine reason for KVS, transfer readiness, under a minute.

Say this answer out loud

What is your teaching philosophy in one line, and how does it show in a lesson?

Every child can learn the concept; my job is to find the entry point. In a Class 7 lesson on fractions I keep three entry points ready: a roti cut into pieces for the child who needs an object, a number line for the child who thinks visually, and a word problem about splitting a cricket team's bus fare for the child who already gets it. Same objective, three doors.

Say this answer out loud

How do you prepare a lesson plan, and what is in it that most teachers skip?

I start from the learning outcome in the NCERT document, write one measurable objective, then plan the hook, explanation, activity, check for understanding and closure, each with minutes. The part most teachers skip is the anticipated misconception: in Class 9 Motion, that acceleration only means speeding up. I plan a question that surfaces it and an example, a ball thrown upward, that corrects it.

Say this answer out loud

How do you handle a mixed-ability class of 45 students?

I group by task, not by ability label. In my Class 8 Science section in Haridwar I ran the Light chapter with three task cards: a drawing task for ray diagrams, a measuring task with a mirror and scale, and a design task to make a periscope. Every child did the core task; faster groups moved to the design task and then explained it to the others. Peer explanation cost me nothing and gave the strongest children a role.

Say this answer out loud

What is competency-based education, and how is it different from what you did in school?

Competency-based education judges whether a child can apply a concept in an unfamiliar situation, not reproduce a textbook line. My school test asked me to define photosynthesis. A competency question gives a graph of oxygen output against light intensity for two plants and asks which plant is in shade. CBSE now sets around half the board paper in this form, so my class tests follow the same pattern from Class 9.

Say this answer out loud

How do you use ICT when the lab is shared and connectivity is poor?

I keep ICT asynchronous. I download PhET simulations and DIKSHA videos at home and carry them on a pen drive, so a Class 10 Electricity lesson runs offline on the single projector. For assessment I print a QR code linked to a short quiz the children attempt on a parent's phone, and collect answers on paper from those who cannot. The tool never decides whether the lesson happens.

Say this answer out loud

How do you assess a child apart from written tests?

Under CBSE's internal assessment I use periodic tests, portfolio work, subject enrichment and notebook checking. In Class 6 Social Science I assess map work and a two-minute oral presentation on a local monument; in Class 10 Science the practical record and a group model. I keep a three-level rubric so the child knows why she got 3 out of 5, and I share it before the task.

Say this answer out loud

What will you do if a student is consistently failing in your subject?

First I find where the gap starts. A Class 9 student failing Maths usually lost the thread in Class 6 or 7, so I give a short diagnostic on fractions and integers. Then I run a remedial group in the zero period twice a week at that level, give the parent one specific thing to do at home, and track one target. In my last school Aman went from 11 to 41 in two terms by fixing integers alone.

Say this answer out loud

Why should we select you over a candidate with more experience?

Because I bring two things a KVS classroom needs now. I have taught in Hindi and English in the same lesson for three years in a school where half the class came from Hindi-medium primaries, and I have already run competency-based assessment and CCA records under the CBSE scheme. Experience matters, but so does being current with NEP 2020 and NCF 2023, and I am.

Subject questions the expert asks, with model answers

PGT Physics: explain to a Class 11 student why a satellite does not fall to the Earth.

It is falling all the time, but it is also moving sideways so fast that the Earth curves away beneath it. I draw Newton's cannon: a ball fired faster and faster from a mountain until, at about 7.8 kilometres per second, it never lands. Then I connect it to v equals root of GM by r and ask what happens if the speed drops, which brings in orbital decay and why ISRO fires thrusters on satellites.

Teach it, do not recite it: picture first, formula second.

TGT Maths: a child says minus three minus minus two equals minus five. What do you do?

I would not say wrong. I take the number line and a temperature story: it is minus 3 degrees in Shimla and we remove a cold of minus 2, so the day gets warmer. We move right by two and land on minus 1. Then the child does minus 4 minus minus 3 on the line herself. The misconception is that two minus signs always mean a bigger negative; the line fixes it faster than a rule.

Say this answer out loud

PGT Chemistry: how would you explain Le Chatelier's principle so it sticks?

I use the Haber process as a factory story: nitrogen and hydrogen on one side, ammonia on the other, fewer molecules on the ammonia side. Push pressure up and the system escapes towards fewer molecules, so yield rises. Heat it and the system favours the endothermic direction, so yield falls, which is why industry settles on about 450 degrees with a catalyst. A sealed bottle of cold drink is the example to work out at home.

TGT English: how do you teach a poem from Honeydew to a class that finds English hard?

For The Ant and the Cricket I first tell the story in Hindi and English in two minutes, so nobody is lost before the poem starts. We read it aloud in chorus for rhythm, I pre-teach five words with pictures, and we act the dialogue in pairs. Comprehension questions come last, starting with yes-or-no. The moral comes from the children's own words: what would you tell the cricket?

Say this answer out loud

PRT: how will you teach place value to Class 2 without a worksheet?

With bundles of ice-cream sticks. Ten loose sticks become one bundle with a rubber band, so 23 is two bundles and three loose. Children build the number I call out, then I give them 3 bundles and ask them to write it. We play a shop where a bundle costs ten rupees. The worksheet comes on day three, after their hands know what a ten is.

Say this answer out loud

PGT Biology: a student asks why we still study Mendel when we have CRISPR.

CRISPR edits a gene; Mendel tells you what happens when that gene is passed on. Sickle-cell screening in tribal districts of Madhya Pradesh uses Mendelian ratios to counsel couples who are both carriers, a one-in-four risk per child. Without Mendel the counselling has no numbers. That turns a history lesson into a public-health tool and usually ends the question.

Situational, NEP 2020 and CCA questions

What are the main changes NEP 2020 brings to a school like a Kendriya Vidyalaya?

Four that touch my classroom directly: the 5 plus 3 plus 3 plus 4 structure, which puts Classes 1 and 2 in a foundational stage with play-based learning; foundational literacy and numeracy by Class 3; competency-based assessment and the move away from rote in board exams; and the home language as a medium where possible in early years. KVS has started Balvatika in many schools, which is the foundational stage in action. NCF 2023 gives the curriculum detail for each stage.

Four changes, one KVS example. The board does not want all twenty recommendations.

What is the three-language formula and how does it work in a KV in Tamil Nadu?

NEP 2020 keeps the three-language formula with flexibility: two of the three should be Indian languages and no language is imposed. In a KV in Chennai the children typically learn English, Hindi and Tamil or Sanskrit, following the KVS pattern while respecting state sentiment. My job is to make Hindi a friendly subject, not a political one: songs, film dialogues, everyday words, not only grammar.

Say this answer out loud

What is CCA and how would you run it as a class teacher?

Co-curricular activities are the house system, clubs, Saturday activities and competitions that KVS treats as part of learning. As class teacher I would keep a CCA register, make sure every child, not only the talented ten, is in at least one club, and link activities to the curriculum: a Class 7 debate on water for Social Science, a science exhibition model for the Light chapter. CCA is also how I spot the quiet child who leads on the field but not in class.

A child in your class is being bullied and the bully's parents are influential. What do you do?

The child's safety comes first, so I separate the two students, speak to the victim privately the same day and inform the Principal in writing. Then I follow the school's anti-bullying committee process under CBSE guidelines: call both sets of parents, record the meeting, agree on consequences and support. Influence does not change the process; the written record protects the child and me. That week I run a class circle on respect without naming anyone.

Say this answer out loud

You are transferred to a KV in a remote station with no lab and intermittent power. How do you teach practicals?

I would list every NCERT practical for my classes and sort them into three: doable with household material, doable with a low-cost kit requested through the Principal, and ones that need the lab. For the third group I use recorded demonstrations downloaded at the regional office and an offline virtual lab. Last year I ran the Class 10 acid-base practical with lemon juice, baking soda and turmeric paper in a borrowed room; the children never knew it was improvised.

A parent complains that you give too much homework and the child is in coaching till 9 pm. How do you respond?

I listen first, then explain what the homework is for: twenty minutes of practice, not two hours. If the child is spending longer, something in the concept is unclear, and I offer to check her notebook next morning. I gently add that KVS discourages excessive homework and that the child needs sleep more than a second coaching batch. If the parent remains unhappy, I invite them to the next PTM so the plan is shared.

Say this answer out loud

What do you know about KVS and the kind of child who studies there?

KVS runs more than 1,250 Kendriya Vidyalayas under the Ministry of Education with a common CBSE curriculum, so a transferable central government or defence family's child can move mid-year without losing a term. Admissions follow a priority order that starts with central government and defence employees' wards, with reservation for SC, ST, EWS and differently-abled children. The child is often new to the city, sometimes to the language, and the teacher is the first stable adult in that new place.

NVS interview questions: hostel duties and the residential campus

Are you ready to live on campus and be a house master? What does the job involve?

Yes. A house master in a JNV is responsible for about 50 to 60 children: morning PT and assembly, dormitory checks, supervised evening study from around 6 to 8, lights out, a night round, and a sick or homesick child at 2 am. My wife and I discussed it before I applied; she is a teacher too and we are from a village in Sitamarhi where the JNV was the dream school. I know accommodation is on campus and leave is rotated; I am not expecting a 9 to 4 job.

Specific duties, family discussed, no illusions. The NVS board rejects candidates who have not thought about it.

A Class 6 child from a village has been crying every night for two weeks and wants to go home. What do you do?

Homesickness in the first month is normal; the child needs a routine and a person, not a lecture. I pair him with a Class 8 buddy from the same block, sit beside him on the allowed phone call home, give him a small responsibility such as the dormitory notice board, and ask the parents to encourage him rather than offer to take him home. If it continues past a month with no appetite or sleep, I involve the counsellor and the Principal.

Say this answer out loud

What is the migration scheme in NVS and how would you prepare a child for it?

In Class 9 a share of students, around 30 percent, exchange with a JNV in a different linguistic region for one year, so a child from Jharkhand spends Class 9 in Karnataka. It builds national integration and the third language. I would prepare the child in Class 8 with basic phrases of the destination language, a letter exchange with the partner school, and honest talk about food and weather. For children arriving at our JNV I would run a welcome week with buddies from the same house.

Say this answer out loud

How will you run evening supervised study for 60 children of mixed classes?

I split the two hours into a fixed block and a flexible block. In the first hour every child does homework in silence by class rows while I move between rows with a checklist of the day's assignments. In the second hour I run a 20-minute remedial group for Class 6 and 7 on reading or basic arithmetic while seniors work on their own targets, and keep the last ten minutes for an oral quiz. A Class 10 monitor helps with discipline, not teaching.

Say this answer out loud

What is different about teaching a first-generation learner compared with a city child?

The gap is exposure, not intelligence. A child from a village school in Dumka may never have seen a microscope, a bar graph or a full English sentence spoken aloud, but can calculate the yield of a field in his head. So I start from what he knows, name things in his language first, use far more concrete material in Classes 6 and 7, and never assume the home can help with homework; the hostel is the home. By Class 10 these children routinely outscore city schools, which is the point of Navodaya.

Practise out loud: what the AI board checks

Reading model answers is not the same as saying them with a Principal looking at you. The ExamPilot KVS and NVS mocks put you before a three-member AI panel in the real board's order: the chair opens from your profile, the subject expert asks you to teach a topic and probes it, the pedagogy member runs NEP 2020, assessment and situational questions, and for NVS a residential-life member asks about house duties. The panel interrupts, follows up and switches to Hindi when a real board would.

  • Structure of the demo: objective stated, one example, one check for understanding, closure inside the time
  • Subject accuracy at the class level plus one up, and whether you explain to a child or recite to the panel
  • Pedagogy vocabulary used correctly: learning outcome, competency, rubric, remedial, inclusive, CCA
  • Situational judgement: safety first, written record, parent involvement, escalation

You get a report after each session with the panel's notes on every answer and a rewrite of your weakest one. Do it twice: once to find the gaps, once to close them. If you also face DSSSB, AWES or EMRS boards this season, teacher interview questions covers what is common to all of them, and the NVS mock runs the hostel-duties round on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks is the KVS interview and what is its weightage?
In the 2025-26 CBSE-conducted recruitment the interview is held for 100 marks and carries 15 percent of final merit, with 85 percent from the Tier-2 subject paper; for teaching posts it includes a demo lesson. In KVS's own 2022-23 recruitment the Professional Competency Test was 60 marks, split equally between demo teaching and interview, with a 70:30 weightage against the written test. Confirm the figure in the notification for your cycle.
When is the KVS NVS interview date 2026 and where is it published?
KVS and NVS do not announce one date. The Tier-2 result carries the shortlisted roll numbers, a post-wise and region-wise schedule follows, and your call letter in the candidate login shows venue, date and time. For the 2025-26 cycle interviews ran from mid-September to mid-October 2026 with PGT first, then TGT, PRT and Principal panels. Check kvsangathan.nic.in and navodaya.gov.in under Recruitment, and the CBSE examination portal, for the official notice of your cycle.
Is there a demo class in the KVS PRT interview?
Yes. PRT, TGT and PGT candidates all give a short demo lesson in front of the board, usually five to seven minutes on an NCERT topic told to you at the venue, followed by questions. The PRT demo is judged on play-way and activity methods, simple language and whether you can reach a Class 1 to 5 child, so teach with an object or a story rather than a lecture.
What is the NVS PGT interview like compared with KVS?
The subject and pedagogy parts are similar, but the NVS board adds a residential-life round because every NVS teacher lives on campus as a house master or house mistress. Expect questions on evening supervised study, hostel discipline, a homesick Class 6 child, the Class 9 migration scheme and teaching first-generation rural learners. NVS also gives preference to residential-school experience, so mention any hostel or boarding experience you have.
Which language should I answer in, Hindi or English?
Answer in the language the question was asked in. KVS and NVS boards are bilingual and will deliberately switch, because you must teach children who arrive from both mediums. A clear, simple answer in Hindi scores better than a broken answer in English. Practise explaining your demo topic in both languages before the interview.
