What is the SSB interview and who faces it
SSB stands for Services Selection Board. There are boards at Allahabad (Prayagraj), Bhopal, Bengaluru, Kapurthala and Jalandhar for the Army, Naval Selection Boards at Bhopal, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, and Air Force Selection Boards at Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, Varanasi and Guwahati. Each board is a team of three kinds of assessors: a psychologist, a Group Testing Officer (GTO) and an Interviewing Officer (IO). Over five days they independently rate you on the same fifteen Officer Like Qualities and then meet at a conference to decide recommend or not recommend. Nobody at the SSB is looking for a topper; they are looking for a trainable young officer.
You reach an SSB in one of two ways. After a UPSC written exam (NDA, CDS) or the Air Force's AFCAT, you are shortlisted and asked to pick a date. For entries without a written exam (TES 10+2, TGC, SSC Tech, Navy 10+2 B.Tech, most Navy direct entries, NCC special entry) the shortlist is on board or degree marks and the SSB is the only test. In both cases the board is the same, the tests are the same, and the fifteen qualities are the same. See the NDA SSB page, the CDS and OTA page, the AFSB page and the technical entries page for entry-specific focus areas.
SSB interview process: the five days, day by day
- 1
Reporting day and Day 1: Stage I screening
You report at the Movement Control Office at the railway station or at the board, usually a day before. Day 1 starts with document verification, then the Officer Intelligence Rating test (two booklets of verbal and non-verbal reasoning) and the Picture Perception and Description Test: a hazy picture for thirty seconds, a story in four minutes, then a group discussion of the stories. Results come the same afternoon; most of the batch is screened out and sent home, the rest get a new chest number and stay.
- 2
Day 2: psychology tests
Four back-to-back pen-and-paper tests. Thematic Apperception Test: eleven pictures plus one blank slide, a story each in four minutes. Word Association Test: sixty words, fifteen seconds each. Situation Reaction Test: sixty situations in thirty minutes. Self Description: what your parents, teachers, friends and you think of you, in fifteen minutes. The psychologist never meets you; this paper is the whole basis of their rating.
- 3
Days 3 and 4: GTO tasks, and the personal interview on any afternoon
The Group Testing Officer runs nine tasks across two days: group discussion (two topics), group planning exercise, progressive group task, half group task, individual obstacles (ten obstacles in three minutes), group obstacle race (snake race), command task, lecturette (three minutes on a card topic) and final group task. Your personal interview with the IO, thirty to sixty minutes, is slotted on the afternoon of Day 2, 3 or 4 depending on your chest number.
- 4
Day 5: conference
All assessors sit with the board president. You walk in for a minute or two, answer a couple of light questions, and leave; borderline cases get longer questions. Results are read out the same afternoon. Recommended candidates stay for the medical board; the rest leave that evening.
There are no marks inside the SSB
The IO, GTO and psychologist each rate the fifteen OLQs on their own; the conference decides. For NDA and CDS the UPSC merit list then adds the written and the SSB with equal weight (NDA: 900 and 900; CDS IMA, INA, AFA: 300 and 300; OTA: 200 written and 300 SSB). For TES, TGC, SSC Tech and most Navy entries the SSB recommendation plus medical fitness is the whole merit.
SSB interview letter and dates: how the call-up works
Searches for the SSB interview letter and the NDA SSB interview date peak after every UPSC result, and the process is the same each cycle. UPSC publishes the NDA or CDS written result and the notice asks qualified candidates to register on joinindianarmy.nic.in (Army and Navy boards) or the Air Force careers portal within about two weeks. The Directorate General of Recruiting then allots a selection centre and a batch, and the board emails and SMSes a call-up letter to your registered ID; it is not posted. For TES, TGC, SSC Tech and Navy entries the shortlist itself is published on the recruiting site and you log in to pick a date from the slots on offer, first come first served, so log in the day the shortlist appears.
From past cycles, SSB batches for an NDA or CDS result usually begin four to eight weeks after the written result and run for two to four months, because thousands of candidates are called in batches. AFSBs follow a similar rhythm after the AFCAT result. We do not print 2026 batch dates because they change every cycle; check the UPSC result notice, your registered email and the official sites linked at the end of this guide.
- Carry the call-up letter printout, the UPSC or AFCAT admit card, twenty passport photographs, and originals plus attested copies of your Class 10 and 12 marksheets and certificates, degree marksheets if applicable, and ID proof. Original age and education certificates are shown to the SSB, never sent to UPSC.
- If you cannot attend the allotted date, request a change through the portal or the centre before the date; a no-show without intimation can cost you that cycle.
- Reporting time, the MCO location and the kit list are in the call-up letter; read it twice.
The 15 Officer Like Qualities the board rates you on
The personal interview with the Interviewing Officer
The IO is a serving Colonel, Captain or Group Captain equivalent. The interview is built from your Personal Information Questionnaire, the PIQ form you fill on the reporting day: marks, schools, family occupations, hobbies, sports, positions held, friends. It opens with a minute of rapport, then the IO asks two or three very long multi-part questions, each stringing together eight to twelve items: family, father's work, school, Class 10 and 12 marks, subjects liked and disliked and why, three best friends and what they think of you, hobbies and how often you do them, a typical day. The IO notes what you forget and in which order you answered. Then come practical situations, current affairs and service awareness, and finally motivation: why the forces, what your parents think, and your plan if you are not recommended. The IO gives no feedback and no expression.
- Write your PIQ at home first, in the words you will speak; every number you write is a question.
- Answer multi-part questions in the order asked, with a short marker for each part (family, then school, then marks). Dropping a part is noted.
- Give numbers, not adjectives: 78 percent, three times a week, captain for two years.
- One honest weakness with an incident beats three safe ones.
- If a fact is changed mid-situation (the phone is dead now), restate your plan in two sentences; the IO is testing speed of decision, not the original plan.
SSB interview questions with model answers (IO round)
Tell me about your family, your father's work, your schooling, your marks in Class 10 and 12, the subjects you liked and disliked, your three best friends and your hobbies.
Sir, we are four at home in Rohtak. My father runs a hardware shop on Delhi Road and my mother teaches Hindi in a government school; my younger sister is in Class 9. I studied at DAV Public School, Rohtak, from Class 1 to 12. I scored 86 percent in Class 10 and 79 percent in Class 12 with PCM. I liked mathematics because I could check my own answers; I disliked chemistry in Class 12 because I never got the organic part and my marks fell to 64. My three closest friends are Himanshu, Rahul and Sakshi; they would say I am reliable but sometimes too blunt. My hobbies are cycling, about forty kilometres every Sunday with a group of six, and reading Hindi fiction, mostly Premchand.
The IO checks that you covered every part in order and that the marks match the PIQ. Say the weak marks yourself before the IO finds them.
Say this answer out loudWhy do you want to join the Indian Army at seventeen when you could do engineering first?
Sir, I did get a seat in a private engineering college in Sonipat, and I will take it if I am not recommended. But I have wanted NDA since my NCC camp in Class 11 at Ropar, where I led a section of eight cadets for ten days and realised I liked being responsible for people more than I liked the lab. At seventeen I get three years of the academy and a commission at twenty-one; after engineering I would still try through TGC or CDS, so I would rather start now.
The board wants a reason that survives the follow-up and an honest fallback. Never say there is no Plan B.
Say this answer out loudWhat do your parents think about you joining the forces?
Sir, my mother was worried at first; her brother served in the Bihar Regiment and was posted in Siachen in 2006, so she knows what it means. We talked it through after my NDA written result, and she came with me to buy the clothes for this SSB. My father is fully for it; he was the one who filled the UPSC form with me.
A specific family conversation shows maturity; a line like they are very supportive shows nothing.
Say this answer out loudYour Class 12 marks dropped from 86 to 79. What happened?
Sir, in Class 12 I spent the first six months on JEE coaching in the evenings and board preparation suffered, especially chemistry where I got 64. I noticed it in the pre-boards in December, dropped the coaching, and pulled physics and maths up to 85 and 91. The drop is on me; I took on more than I could manage and corrected it late.
Own the cause, show the correction, give the numbers. The IO is testing honesty and self-awareness, not the marks.
Say this answer out loudWhat would your friends say is your biggest weakness?
Sir, they would say I speak before I think. In the inter-house football final in Class 11, I argued with the referee over an offside call and got a yellow card, and we lost a man for ten minutes. After that match my captain told me to let him handle officials. I now count to three before I answer anyone I disagree with. It still slips sometimes with my sister.
Weakness plus incident plus what you changed. Avoid I am a perfectionist.
Say this answer out loudYou are cycling alone on the highway at night and see a scooter accident; the rider is bleeding and unconscious. What will you do?
Sir, first I would move my cycle off the road and switch on my phone torch so passing vehicles see us. I would check whether he is breathing, press a cloth on the bleeding, and not move his neck. I would call 108 and tell them the kilometre stone, then call 112. I would stop the next vehicle and ask the driver to put hazard lights on behind us. I would stay until the ambulance arrived and give the police my number.
Ordered actions, your own safety first, no heroics. Expect the IO to change a fact: the phone has no network. Answer again in two lines.
Say this answer out loudSuppose your phone has no network in that situation. Now what?
Sir, then I would flag down the first vehicle, ask the driver to drive two kilometres ahead to call 108 from wherever there is network, and keep pressure on the wound myself. If no vehicle came within a few minutes I would lift him into the next vehicle that stopped, keeping his head supported, and go to the nearest PHC.
Speed of decision: a short, revised plan without panic.
Say this answer out loudName three neighbouring countries of India and one issue we have with each.
Sir, Pakistan, with cross-border terrorism and the Line of Control; China, with the undemarcated Line of Actual Control, especially in eastern Ladakh and Arunachal; and Bangladesh, with illegal migration and river water sharing, particularly the Teesta. Our relations with Bhutan and Nepal are friendlier, though Nepal's map claim on Kalapani is an open issue.
Service awareness and current affairs; keep it factual and balanced, not political.
Say this answer out loudWhat is the difference between the Army, Navy and Air Force academies you have applied for?
Sir, NDA at Khadakwasla trains cadets of all three services together for three years with a BA, BSc or BTech degree, then Army cadets go to IMA Dehradun for a year, Navy cadets to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, and Air Force cadets to the Air Force Academy at Dundigal. My first preference is Army because I want to lead troops; I have put Air Force second because I have physics and maths and cleared the medical standards for flying in my reading.
Shows you know where you are going. The IO will ask why your second preference is second.
Say this answer out loudWho is the Chief of Defence Staff and what does the post do?
Sir, the Chief of Defence Staff heads the Department of Military Affairs and is the permanent chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, the single-point military adviser to the Defence Minister, and the officer driving theatre commands and joint procurement. I would rather not guess the name of the current holder; I last checked before my written exam and would confirm it before stating it.
If you are not certain, say so cleanly. A confident wrong name is worse than an honest I will confirm.
Say this answer out loudTell me about a time you took responsibility without being asked.
Sir, in March 2025 our school's annual day coordinator fell ill a week before the event. Nobody had the stage schedule. I took the file from the staff room, called the twelve class representatives that evening, and put the running order on a shared sheet. On the day, I ran the backstage with a whistle and two juniors. The function started seven minutes late instead of the usual forty.
Initiative with a date, a scale and a result. The IO cross-checks this against your PIQ positions held.
Say this answer out loudWhat sport do you play, how often, and what have you achieved in it?
Sir, football. I play as right back, three evenings a week at the Mansarovar Park ground, and I played for Rohtak district under-17 in 2024 where we reached the state quarter-final. I also run five kilometres every morning in about twenty-four minutes, which I started for the NDA physical standards.
Frequency plus level plus a number. Hobbies you cannot describe in this detail should not be on the PIQ.
Say this answer out loudIf you are not recommended this time, what will you do?
Sir, I will join the engineering college in Sonipat, keep running, and take NDA 2 this year as my second attempt; my age allows two more attempts. I will also ask for my chest number feedback through the board if the system allows, work on what I can, and if NDA does not work out I will come back through CDS or TGC after my degree.
Realistic fallback plus continued motivation. Do not say I will keep trying till I die.
Say this answer out loudWhat do you know about the regiment or arm you would like to join?
Sir, I would like the Corps of Engineers. Sappers build and breach obstacles, bridge rivers and clear mines, and they also do civil work like the Border Roads Organisation roads in Ladakh. I read about the Madras Sappers raising a Bailey bridge in Sikkim after the October 2023 Teesta flood. My maths and physics would be used, and the Corps also lets officers do an engineering degree at CME Pune.
Depth in one arm beats a list of ten. The IO may ask what you will do if you are allotted infantry instead.
Say this answer out loudWhat is your daily routine right now?
Sir, I wake at 5.15, run five kilometres, and do push-ups and the rope. From seven to nine I study, then college from nine to four. I help in my father's shop from five to seven on Tuesdays and Saturdays, do my SSB reading for an hour, and sleep by 10.30. On Sundays I cycle with my group and visit my grandmother in Meham.
Stamina, organising ability and sense of responsibility all appear in a routine. Keep it true; the IO will ask what you did yesterday.
Say this answer out loudWhy should the board recommend you over the other candidates in your group?
Sir, I would not say I am better than them; two of them are repeaters who know more than me. What I can say is that everything I have told you is true, I have led people in NCC and at school, I am physically fit, and I have a clear reason to be here. If the board thinks I am trainable, I will not waste the training.
Humility with substance. The board hates candidates who run down the group they have just spent three days with.
Say this answer out loudYour friend in the hostel is caught with a phone during an exam and asks you to tell the warden it was yours. What will you do?
Sir, I will refuse, and I will tell him why: if I lie and it comes out, both of us are gone, and if it does not come out I still cannot trust myself afterwards. I would go with him to the warden and ask for the lightest penalty, and I would stay his friend. I would not report him myself since he has already been caught.
Integrity is tested through a friend, not through a stranger. Say no and keep the relationship.
Say this answer out loudWho in your family or life do you admire most and why?
Sir, my mother. She joined her school as a contract teacher in 2008 on a small salary, cleared the HTET in 2014 while bringing up two children, and now runs the school's exam cell. I have never seen her miss a day of work. From her I learnt that showing up every day matters more than talent.
A real person with a specific achievement. Freedom fighters and cricketers get a follow-up on what you actually know about them.
Say this answer out loudWhat is the one thing you would change about yourself?
Sir, my patience with slow people. In the group task yesterday I started tying the rope myself instead of explaining the knot to the candidate who was struggling. I am working on it by teaching my sister maths, where I have to explain the same thing four times.
If you can connect it to something the IO can see in the same SSB, the answer gains credibility.
Say this answer out loudTell me something about Rohtak that I would not know.
Sir, Rohtak has produced more Olympic and Commonwealth medal wrestlers and boxers per head than almost any district in India; the SAI centre and the Chhotu Ram Stadium are where Sakshi Malik trained. It is also the seat of Maharshi Dayanand University and Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma PGIMS, the state's biggest government hospital. The city's older name was Rohtashgarh.
Every candidate is asked about their district; know its history, economy, two famous people and one problem.
Say this answer out loudFormal dress for the SSB interview, and what to wear on other days
The board does not fail anyone for a wrong shirt, but a crumpled shirt and dusty shoes on interview day is a self-inflicted first impression. Carry two formal sets and two white sets; there is no laundry on Days 2 to 4.
SSB interview books worth buying, and what to skip
- SSB Interview: The Complete Guide by Dr N. K. Natarajan (Arihant): the standard one-volume explanation of every test, with practice sets for the OIR, PPDT and psychology.
- Let's Crack SSB Interview by SSBCrack: shorter, practical, with lots of TAT, WAT and SRT practice, good for a first-timer with three weeks.
- Breaking the Code of SSB Psych Tests by Cdr K. Natarajan: only the psychology; useful if your written answers are the weak link.
- A GK compendium such as Lucent's for static facts, plus one daily newspaper for the last sixty days before your date; for the lecturette, pick fifteen current topics from a yearbook and prepare three-minute talks.
- Skip memorised answer banks and predicted questions: the IO builds questions from your PIQ, so the only book that fully covers your interview is your own life, written down.
Books explain the format; they cannot make you speak. The interview and lecturette are oral tests, so rehearse aloud, timed, with someone who asks the follow-up. That is what our SSB Interview Prep course and the Lecturette for SSB course are for, and the GTO and psychology side is covered by the SSB psychology and GTO practice.
How the ExamPilot SSB mock compresses the personal interview
The real IO interview runs thirty to sixty minutes; our mock runs twenty. You fill a short PIQ-style profile, choose NDA, CDS, AFSB, technical or Navy, and the AI Interviewing Officer follows the real sequence: rapport, two long multi-part questions in the IO's style, consistency checks against what you said earlier, two situations with a fact changed mid-answer, service awareness, and the motivation close. Like the real IO, it gives no feedback during the interview. Afterwards you get an OLQ report: which of the fifteen qualities your answers evidenced, which parts of the multi-part questions you dropped, where your numbers contradicted your profile, and your speaking rate and filler count. Run it once per weak area before your date.

Face a 20-minute AI Interviewing Officer
A retired-IO voice asks PIQ-based multi-part questions, changes facts mid-situation and rates your answers on the fifteen OLQs.
SSB · NDA & Naval Academy entry — SSB after the UPSC written
Frequently asked questions
- What is the full form of SSB and what is the SSB interview?
- SSB is the Services Selection Board. The SSB interview is the five-day officer selection process of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force (the Air Force calls its boards AFSB), consisting of Stage I screening (OIR test and PPDT), Stage II psychology tests, Group Testing Officer tasks and a personal interview with the Interviewing Officer, and a final conference. Every officer entry, NDA, CDS, AFCAT, TES, TGC, SSC Tech and the Navy entries, passes through it.
- How do I get the SSB interview letter and date for NDA?
- After the NDA written result, UPSC's notice asks you to register on joinindianarmy.nic.in within about two weeks. The Directorate General of Recruiting allots your selection centre and batch, and the board emails and SMSes the call-up letter to your registered ID. Batches usually begin a few weeks after the result and run for a few months. There is no postal letter, so keep the registered email open and check the official sites rather than coaching forums for your date.
- What is the formal dress for the SSB interview?
- For the personal interview, the conference and the indoor tests, men wear a light formal shirt, dark trousers, belt and polished black formal shoes, with a tie optional; women wear a formal shirt and trousers, or a plain salwar kameez or saree, with closed flat shoes. For GTO days everyone wears a white T-shirt, white shorts or track pants and white sports shoes. Carry two sets of each; the call-up letter lists the kit.
- Which books are best for the SSB interview?
- One complete guide (Dr N. K. Natarajan's SSB Interview: The Complete Guide, or SSBCrack's Let's Crack SSB Interview), one psychology-only book if that is your weak area (Cdr K. Natarajan's Breaking the Code of SSB Psych Tests), a GK compendium and a daily newspaper for the last two months. Skip predicted question banks: the IO's questions come from your PIQ, and speaking practice matters more than a third book.
- How many marks is the SSB interview out of?
- Inside the SSB there are no stage-wise marks; the IO, GTO and psychologist rate the fifteen OLQs independently and the conference recommends or does not. The UPSC merit list for NDA gives the written exam and the SSB 900 marks each; for CDS it is 300 each for IMA, INA and AFA and 200 written plus 300 SSB for OTA. For entries without a written exam (TES, TGC, SSC Tech, Navy direct entries) the SSB recommendation and the medical decide merit.
- How long is the personal interview with the IO and when does it happen?
- Thirty to sixty minutes, on the afternoon of Day 2, 3 or 4 depending on your chest number. It opens with rapport, moves through two or three long multi-part questions built from your PIQ, then practical situations, current affairs and service awareness, and ends on motivation and your fallback plan. The IO gives no feedback during or after.
- Can I answer the SSB interview in Hindi?
- The interview is normally in English and the IO expects you to try, but IOs do switch to Hindi or let you mix if you are struggling, and clarity of thought is rated far above vocabulary. Practise your PIQ answers in English because the lecturette and GD are also in English; if you are weak, our Hindi-medium NDA interview questions in Hindi guide gives the same answers in Hinglish to build from.
