What this interview looks like
The UPSC Engineering Services personality test carries 200 marks out of 1300, and the Combined Geo-Scientist personality test carries 200 marks out of 1200, while the Combined Medical Services personality test carries 100 marks out of 600. The UPSC board is chaired by a Commission member with three or four other members, typically a retired chief engineer, Engineer-in-Chief or Director General from a central engineering organisation, an academic from an IIT or NIT, and a generalist administrator. It runs 20 to 30 minutes, opens from the Detailed Application Form, and then probes the discipline at a conceptual level, recent developments in the sector, an engineering-ethics or administrative dilemma, and the candidate's reasons for a government engineering service and their cadre preference. State PSC Assistant Engineer interviews are shorter, usually 15 to 20 minutes before a Commission member and one or two departmental engineers, and carry around 100 marks on top of a written examination of 700 to 900 marks, with the exact scheme in each state's notification. Railway Recruitment Board JE and SSE posts have had no interview since the mid-2010s, so railway technical boards in practice mean departmental selection boards for serving staff, metro rail corporations that still interview for engineer and assistant-manager posts, and railway PSUs such as RVNL, IRCON, RITES and Konkan Railway. The ExamPilot mock uses the civil-services board sitting of 20 minutes for the two UPSC posts and the PSU interview sitting of 16 minutes for state and railway posts, with Hindi and English mixed as those boards do.

What to expect
5 rounds, one after another
A board led by a chairperson with members taking turns, mirroring the UPSC Personality Test. Opens from the candidate's DAF (home state, education, work, hobbies, optional subject), then a member probes current affairs and policy with a demand for balanced views, a member poses an administrative ethics dilemma, and a member explores hobbies, motivation and service preference. The board assesses personality, balance and judgement, not recall.
