What this interview looks like
Each PSU shortlists candidates on their GATE score in the relevant paper, in a ratio such as five to eight candidates per vacancy, and calls them to a personal interview, sometimes preceded by a group discussion or a short group task. The interview is typically 20 to 30 minutes before a panel of four to six: a general manager or executive director in the chair, a senior engineer from the discipline, an HR executive and often an external academic or a representative for reserved categories. The technical member usually starts from the final-year project and internship and moves to GATE-level fundamentals of the discipline with a plant or field twist. The HR and chair members probe why a PSU and why this company, willingness for all-India posting at remote plants, rigs, mines or project sites, the service bond and training year, other offers, and awareness of what the company does today. Weightage differs by company: GATE usually carries 75 to 85 per cent and the GD and interview together 15 to 25 per cent, while ONGC gives the interview a larger share. Final merit is GATE plus GD and PI, with a qualifying minimum in the interview for most companies. The ExamPilot mock compresses this into a 16-minute sitting: introduction, a six-minute discipline round, four minutes on fit and posting, two plant situations and a close, with the real panel's mix of English and Hindi.

What to expect
5 rounds, one after another
The personal-interview part of a Maharatna or Navratna PSU selection, the way NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, BHEL, PGCIL, SAIL, Coal India, BEL and HAL run it: a short introduction with the HR member, a long technical round in the candidate's GATE discipline led by a senior engineer from the plant or field, an HR-and-fit round with a general manager on why a PSU, all-India posting, the service bond and career path, two plant or site situations on safety, breakdowns, contractors and unions, and a brief close. Real panels are four to six members for 20 to 30 minutes and mix English and Hindi freely; the technical round usually starts from the final-year project and goes to GATE-level fundamentals.

How scoring works
A report you can act on
Every round is scored on the rubric
Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.
Only what you actually said counts
Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.
Communication is always measured
Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

Scored on
- Technical depth35%
GATE-level command of the discipline: states the right principle, gets the direction and order of magnitude right, explains why a formula holds and where it breaks, and connects theory to real plant or field equipment; does not bluff when unsure.
- Problem solving & judgement20%
Reasons step by step through a numerical or a fault scenario, asks what data is needed, states assumptions, checks limits, and in plant situations sequences actions correctly with safety and isolation before diagnosis and repair.
- Communication20%
Clear and concise in English or Hindi; explains a technical idea so a non-specialist panel member follows it; answers the question asked; comfortable saying I do not know and reasoning from first principles.
- Fit & attitude25%
Credible reason for a public-sector career beyond job security, genuine willingness for remote plant, mine, rig or project postings and transfers, honest about the bond and about other attempts, respect for technicians, contractors and union members, and a realistic picture of an executive trainee's first years.
