Cadet Pilot & Merchant Navy Interview Preparation

Aviation & maritime careers — cadet pilot, merchant navy sponsorship and officer interviews

Mock interviews for the two sea-and-sky careers young Indians queue up for: airline cadet pilot programmes and CPL-holder airline interviews, and merchant navy sponsorship for deck cadets, marine engineering trainees and ratings. Also covers lateral interviews for junior officers who already hold a certificate of competency. The panel is an airline captain or a ship's chief engineer, an HR or crewing manager, and a hiring manager who checks why you want a life away from home for months at a time.

Airlines and their cadet-programme partners (IndiGo with CAE, L3Harris, FTE Jerez and Skyborne; Air India with its own flying academy and partner FTOs; Akasa and SpiceJet cadet intakes), DGCA-approved flying training organisations, shipping companies and their crewing or manning offices (Shipping Corporation of India, Great Eastern, Synergy Marine, Anglo-Eastern, MSC Crewing, Fleet Management, Wallem, Bernhard Schulte, Maersk, Scorpio and others) and the maritime institutes that run company-sponsored DNS, B.Sc. Nautical Science, GME and GP Rating intakes under the Indian Maritime University and DG Shipping 3 roles 3 languages 5 AI interviewers

What this interview looks like

Airline cadet pilot selection typically runs in stages: an online application with DGCA Class 2 medical and 10+2 physics and maths eligibility, a computer-based aptitude and psychometric test such as COMPASS or cut-e, a group exercise, and a panel interview with a training captain and HR before the final Class 1 medical. CPL holders applying for a type rating or a direct-entry first-officer slot face a technical interview on aerodynamics, meteorology, air regulations and aircraft systems, plus an HR round and often a simulator assessment. Merchant navy sponsorship interviews are run by the shipping company or its crewing office, usually after IMU-CET or the company's own written test: a technical round on physics, mathematics and basic ship or engine knowledge, an HR or crewing-manager round on family, discipline and life at sea, and a medical to DG Shipping and STCW standards. Lateral officer interviews for a second officer, third officer, fourth engineer or ETO are mostly technical and procedural: ROR, passage planning, stability, machinery, PMS and the ISM Code, with a crewing manager checking contract history and conduct. ExamPilot compresses all of this into a 17-minute panel: an HR or crewing screen, a hiring-manager round on your motivation and judgement, a technical round led by a captain or chief engineer in your chosen stream, a behavioural round on teamwork and pressure, and a closing on terms, bonds and your questions.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
