NVS TGT interview questions

Questions panels commonly ask in the NVS TGT interview, with what a strong answer covers. Practise them aloud with the AI panel.

  1. Foundational gaps

Most of your new Class 6 students cleared the JNV selection test from village schools, but several cannot read a paragraph fluently. How would you plan their first term?

    What a strong answer covers

A diagnostic of reading levels, short daily reading periods, graded readers and read-aloud, peer reading partners, and linking with the language teachers. Integrates reading into subject lessons and uses evening study for practice. Avoid assuming that selection means every child already reads at grade level.

  2. Hostel life

A Class 6 girl cries every evening and wants to go home. Her parents are daily-wage workers who cannot visit often. What would you do as her house tutor?

    What a strong answer covers

Warm, consistent attention: a senior buddy, involving her in house activities, regular calls home allowed by the school, informing the matron and counsellor, and watching eating and sleeping. Patience over weeks rather than days. Avoid dismissing it as normal or allowing her to miss classes for long periods.

  3. Third language

As a TGT Third Language teacher at a JNV, how would you make students from another state enjoy learning the regional language of the Vidyalaya?

    What a strong answer covers

Spoken language first through songs, greetings and campus vocabulary, local festivals and stories, labelling objects around school, and small conversations with local staff. Assessment through speaking tasks. Avoid starting with script drills and grammar only, or treating the third language as a low-priority subject.

  4. Demo lesson

Teach the water cycle to Class 7 using something students can observe on campus, in about five minutes.

    What a strong answer covers

Observation-based start, such as dew on grass, a steaming cooking pot from the mess or wet clothes drying, then evaporation, condensation and precipitation drawn as a cycle, with student participation and a quick question at the end. Avoid a lecture with a textbook diagram and no student involvement.

  5. Discipline

During evening supervised study, a group of Class 9 boys keeps disturbing others and one of them is rude to you. How do you handle it that night and afterwards?

    What a strong answer covers

Calm, firm action in the moment, separating the group, a private conversation later with the rude student, involving the house master, consistent consequences under house rules and understanding underlying causes. Avoid public humiliation, physical punishment, which is prohibited, or ignoring the incident.

  6. Assessment

How would you conduct periodic assessment in Class 8 Social Science so that it helps learning and not only produces marks for the report card?

    What a strong answer covers

A mix of quizzes, projects, map work, oral presentations and portfolios, with feedback given quickly and remedial follow-up for gaps. Links to competency-based assessment under NEP 2020. Avoid describing only written unit tests or treating assessment as a ranking exercise.

  7. Bilingual teaching

In your Class 10 Mathematics section, students come from Hindi-medium backgrounds but the board paper is in English for some of them. How would you handle the language of instruction?

    What a strong answer covers

Bilingual teaching with technical terms introduced in both languages, glossaries in notebooks, gradual shift to English for written answers where students have chosen it, and patience with mixed-language explanations. Avoid insisting on English only from day one or ignoring the medium in which students will write the board exam.

  8. NEP 2020

What is one middle-stage competency in Science described under NEP 2020, and how would you know if a Class 8 student has achieved it?

    What a strong answer covers

Names a real competency such as designing a simple investigation, observing and recording, or explaining phenomena with evidence, then describes a performance task and a simple rubric used to judge it. Avoid vague answers like understanding science well, with no observable evidence.

  9. Co-curricular

Besides teaching, a JNV TGT is expected to coach a sport, manage a house or run a club. What would you take up, and what would you achieve in a year?

    What a strong answer covers

A specific choice drawn from real skill, such as athletics, a science club or the school band, with a concrete plan: practice schedule, inter-house events, regional competitions and inclusion of reluctant students. Avoid vague willingness to do anything without naming a real skill or a measurable aim.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
