What this interview looks like

SBI PO Phase III has three parts on the same day: a psychometric test (qualifying, shared with the board), a Group Exercise of 20 marks and a personal interview of 30 marks, 50 marks in total, as per the latest advertisement. Final merit takes Mains marks scaled to 75 and Phase III scaled to 25, which makes this the heaviest interview weightage in bank recruitment. The board is usually four to five senior SBI officers, mostly DGM and AGM rank with an HR member, and the interview runs 15 to 25 minutes. The HR member opens with your biodata, hometown, education and any gaps; the banking members test repo rate, RBI actions, products and NPA basics, often one question from your own degree, and then put a branch situation to you. Boards switch between English and Hindi freely and expect the same from you. For Circle Based Officers the board also checks your comfort in the circle's local language and your knowledge of the local economy. The ExamPilot mock compresses the interview part into fifteen minutes: introduction, banking and finance, two branch situations, and a mobility-and-motivation close. The Group Exercise and psychometric test are not simulated.

How it is weighted

Phase III carries 50 marks: Group Exercise 20 plus Interview 30, with the psychometric test qualifying only, as per the latest advertisement. In final merit, Mains is scaled to 75 and Phase III to 25. The bank fixes a minimum qualifying score in Phase III each year.

SBI PO PO interview questions

Questions panels commonly ask in the SBI PO PO interview, with what a strong answer covers. Practise them aloud with the AI panel.

  1. Biodata

Your biodata shows a two-year gap after graduation. What exactly did you do in those years, and what did you learn that will help you as a PO?

    What a strong answer covers

A truthful, specific account, such as exam preparation, a job, family responsibility or a course, with one concrete skill or lesson that transfers to banking, like handling customers or managing money. Calm and without apology. Avoid vague answers like I was preparing, or inventing work experience the board can verify.

  2. Why SBI

Why SBI and not any other public-sector bank? Tell us something about SBI that a customer would not know.

    What a strong answer covers

Knows SBI's origin in the Imperial Bank of India and its formation in 1955, its scale and reach including overseas offices, its role in government business, and digital platforms such as YONO, then links this to personal reasons. Avoid flattery without facts or saying SBI simply pays better.

  3. Monetary policy

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee keeps the repo rate unchanged at its latest meeting. Explain to a retired depositor what that means for her fixed deposit.

    What a strong answer covers

Plain explanation that an unchanged repo means banks have no fresh pressure to change deposit or lending rates, so her existing FD rate is locked for its term and new FD rates may stay similar, though banks set deposit rates on their own funding needs. Avoid quoting current figures you are unsure of or confusing repo with bank rate.

  4. Products

A street vendor wants ₹50,000 to buy a handcart and stock. Which SBI or government-backed products would you consider, and what would you check?

    What a strong answer covers

Considers a Mudra Shishu loan or the PM SVANidhi scheme for street vendors, checks identity and vending certificate or recommendation, business viability, repayment capacity and digital transaction history, and explains repayment clearly. Avoid suggesting a personal loan with high interest or skipping basic due diligence.

  5. NPA basics

What is the difference between provisioning and write-off, and does a written-off loan mean the borrower no longer has to pay?

    What a strong answer covers

Provisioning sets aside money against expected losses on bad loans; write-off removes a fully provided loan from the balance sheet for accounting. Recovery efforts and the borrower's liability continue after a technical write-off. Avoid saying write-off equals waiver, a common mistake boards test.

  6. Ethics

You are a branch manager in a small town and a local politician wants you to sanction a loan to a relative who does not meet the norms. How do you respond?

    What a strong answer covers

Politely explains the eligibility norms and offers to process a proper application, documents the interaction, does not sanction an ineligible loan, and informs the regional office if pressure continues. Avoid giving in, being rude, or turning it into a public dispute.

  7. Graduation subject

As an engineering graduate, how would your degree help you evaluate a loan for a small manufacturing unit?

    What a strong answer covers

Uses technical understanding to judge machinery quotations, installed capacity versus actual use, power and raw-material needs and the realism of the project report, then combines it with cash-flow and repayment analysis. Shows that an engineer can spot an inflated project cost. Avoid saying the degree is irrelevant to banking or ignoring the financial side.

  8. Customer service

    आप एक नाराज़ ग्राहक को कैसे संभालेंगे जो कहता है कि उसका चेक तीन दिन से क्लियर नहीं हुआ है?

    What a strong answer covers

Listens without interrupting, checks the cheque's status in the clearing system, explains the actual reason such as a signature mismatch, a holiday or a return memo, gives a clear timeline and follows up personally. Answering comfortably in Hindi matters because SBI boards switch languages. Avoid arguing or promising what the system cannot deliver.

  9. Mobility

SBI can post you anywhere in India, including a remote branch in the North-East or Ladakh. How do you feel about that?

    What a strong answer covers

Genuine willingness backed by a practical plan, such as learning the local language, understanding the area's economy and customers, and seeing a hard posting as early responsibility and learning. Mentions family having been consulted. Avoid reluctance, conditions, or saying you would seek a transfer as soon as possible.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
