What this interview looks like
A State PSC board is typically a Commission member in the chair with two to four members: a serving or retired senior officer, a subject expert or academic, and often a psychologist or language expert. Interviews run 15 to 30 minutes and open from the candidate's application: home district, education, work, hobbies, choice of post. The chair tests composure and balance; the senior officer presses on the state's economy, welfare schemes, Centre–state and inter-state disputes; a member poses an administrative dilemma a Deputy Collector or DSP would face. Interview marks range from about 75 (APPSC) to 250 (OPSC) and carry 8 to 17 percent of the final merit, which decides the post allotted. Boards switch into Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati or Malayalam without warning, and judge whether you can speak to a citizen as easily as to a secretary. The ExamPilot mock compresses this into a 20-minute board: opening from your profile, a state current-affairs and governance stage, an administrative-situations stage, and a hobbies-and-motivation stage, with questions in the state language where the real board would use it.
How it is weighted
No interview in current TGPSC Group-I notifications; selection on the 900-mark Main examination (six papers of 150). If an oral test is reintroduced, its marks will be stated in the notification; this mock follows the earlier 75-mark pattern and the format used by neighbouring states.
Who this is for
Candidates for Telangana Public Service Commission Group-I posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Commercial Tax Officer, Regional Transport Officer, Municipal Commissioner Grade-II and Assistant Treasury Officer. Note: Telangana removed the interview from Group-I selection in 2016, and recent Group-I notifications have selected on Main marks alone. Use this mock if the oral test is reintroduced, for TGPSC posts that still carry an interview, or to build Telangana-specific depth for any state or UPSC board.
The panel focuses on
- Home district and mandal, education and work, choice of post
- Telangana's flagship schemes and what changed after 2023
- Kaleshwaram and Medigadda: appraisal, contracts and accountability
- Hyderabad's lakes, HYDRAA and the Musi project as administrative dilemmas
- Caste survey, BC reservation and SC sub-classification argued with balance
- Telangana movement, culture and festivals; comfort answering in Telugu

What to expect
5 rounds · 20 minutes
A board led by a chairperson with members taking turns, mirroring the UPSC Personality Test. The board assesses personality, balance and judgement, not recall.

State PSC (South, East & West) TGPSC Group-I interview questions
Questions panels commonly ask in the State PSC (South, East & West) TGPSC Group-I interview, with what a strong answer covers. Practise them aloud with the AI panel.
- Self-presentation
Telangana's Group-I selection is currently based on the Main examination without an interview. If a board did sit, what would you want it to know about you that marks cannot show?
What a strong answer covers
A short, honest picture of qualities that written marks cannot show, such as fieldwork, comfort in Telugu, empathy, leadership and integrity, each backed by a brief real example. Shows awareness that current notifications select on Mains marks. Avoid repeating the CV or making grand claims without evidence.
- Infrastructure accountability
The Medigadda barrage of the Kaleshwaram project suffered damage. As an officer, what lessons would you draw on project appraisal and accountability?
What a strong answer covers
Lessons on independent technical and geological review before approval, quality control during construction, transparent contracts, timely maintenance and clear accountability when structures fail, with a balanced view of the project's irrigation goals. Avoid partisan blame, naming individuals, or speculating on the outcome of inquiries still pending.
- Urban governance
HYDRAA was set up to protect lakes and government land in Hyderabad. How would you balance removing encroachments with the rights of families who bought property in good faith?
What a strong answer covers
Due process before any demolition, verification of how approvals were granted, notices and hearings, action against officials who permitted illegal construction, fair treatment or rehabilitation for buyers misled in good faith, and protecting lake beds for flood safety. Avoid either indiscriminate demolitions or ignoring encroachments for fear of backlash.
- Rehabilitation
The Musi riverfront project involves relocating people living along the river. What principles would guide you as the officer in charge of rehabilitation?
What a strong answer covers
Prior consultation with affected families, fair compensation, housing close to their livelihoods and children's schools, transparent eligibility lists, a working grievance mechanism and special care for the elderly and disabled. Avoid treating relocation only as an engineering or demolition task, or promising what the budget cannot deliver.
- Social justice
Telangana's caste survey and BC reservation proposals have sparked debate. Present arguments for and against, keeping a balanced view.
What a strong answer covers
For: data-based policy and social justice. Against: legal limits on reservation, accuracy of data, possible social divisions. Mentions court rulings on the reservation ceiling and the need for consensus. Avoid partisan positions or caste stereotypes.
- Agriculture policy
As Deputy Collector, how would you ensure that a farmer investment support scheme reaches tenant farmers, not only landowners?
What a strong answer covers
Identifies that support tied to land records misses tenants and sharecroppers, then suggests identifying actual cultivators through gram sabhas and field verification, written tenancy agreements or cultivator cards, and a working grievance channel. Notes owners' fears of losing land. Avoid ignoring tenancy or proposing solutions with no verification method.
- Telangana movement
తెలంగాణ ఉద్యమం గురించి మీకు ఏమి తెలుసు? దాని ప్రధాన కారణాలు ఏమిటి?
What a strong answer covers
Historical background, demands related to water, funds and jobs (neellu, nidhulu, niyamakalu), cultural identity, the role of various groups and the formation of the state in 2014. Balanced and factual, answered in Telugu. Avoid partisan narratives.
- Scheme monitoring
Mission Bhagiratha aimed to supply piped drinking water. How would you check whether water is actually reaching households in a remote mandal?
What a strong answer covers
Field visits at tail-end habitations, household checks on supply hours and pressure, water-quality testing, complaint records and the condition of last-mile pipes and storage. Compare what officials report with what households say. Avoid relying only on official coverage figures or a single inspection.
- Culture
Bathukamma and Bonalu are central to Telangana culture. What do these festivals tell us about the region's society?
What a strong answer covers
Bathukamma celebrates seasonal flowers, nature and women's collective life, and Bonalu honours village goddesses with community offerings, both reflecting Telangana's folk traditions and social bonds. Connects them to state identity and the movement's cultural assertion. Avoid superficial tourist descriptions with no sense of their meaning.
