What this interview looks like

The real board sits in UPSC's Dholpur House in New Delhi. A UPSC member or a senior retired officer chairs it, with three to four members that usually include a retired senior CAPF or IPS officer and an academic. It runs 20 to 30 minutes. The chair opens from the Detailed Application Form: home district, education, work, hobbies and the order in which the candidate has ranked the five forces. Members then probe internal security and border management in the news, the candidate's grasp of what an Assistant Commandant actually does, and situational judgement in law-and-order and command settings. Motivation for a uniformed, transfer-heavy life is tested directly, often by arguing against the candidate's own answer. Marks are 150 of 600, so the board shapes the final rank far more than in the Civil Services. The ExamPilot mock compresses this into a 20-minute four-member board: chair, force member, external academic member and a board psychologist, personalised to your profile.

What to expect

5 rounds, one after another

A board led by a chairperson with members taking turns, mirroring the UPSC Personality Test. Opens from the candidate's DAF (home state, education, work, hobbies, optional subject), then a member probes current affairs and policy with a demand for balanced views, a member poses an administrative ethics dilemma, and a member explores hobbies, motivation and service preference. The board assesses personality, balance and judgement, not recall.

    Opening from the DAF

  3. Round 3

    Ethics & administrative situations

    2–2 questionsup to 2 follow-ups each
  4. Round 4

    Hobbies, motivation & service preference

Shri Anil Kumar Thakur, IPS (Retd.)
    2–3 questionsup to 1 follow-up each
  5. Round 5

    Closing

    · 2:00

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
