What this interview looks like

AWES runs a centralised Online Screening Test (OST), usually in November, and issues a score card that is valid for three years (lifetime for very high scorers). Score-card holders then apply to individual Army Public Schools, which advertise their own vacancies, usually between December and March. Each school constitutes a Board of Officers chaired by the Principal, with a subject expert and a senior teacher, and often a representative of the station Chairman or the School Management Committee. The board runs a 10 to 20 minute interview with a short demo lesson and checks computer proficiency; the OST score has no further weightage, so the interview and demo decide the appointment. Candidates are probed on subject depth at the level to be taught, lesson planning and activity-based methods, classroom discipline, values and the ethos of an Army school community, and the practical realities of contractual terms, the Army station routine and the frequent arrival and departure of children of transferable soldiers. Hindi and English are both used. The ExamPilot mock compresses this into an 18-minute four-member panel: introduction, subject, pedagogy with a demo micro-segment, school situations and a brief closing.

How it is weighted

The OST score card is only an eligibility ticket; the school's Board of Officers decides on the interview, demo lesson and computer-proficiency check. Recommended candidates are appointed by the school, usually on contract for the first year.

Sample questions

AWES TGT interview questions

Questions panels commonly ask in the AWES TGT interview, with what a strong answer covers. Practise them aloud with the AI panel.

  1. Demo lesson

Show us how you would teach the concept of area and perimeter to Class 6 using the school's assembly ground or parade ground.

    What a strong answer covers

Outdoor measurement with a rope or measuring tape, students walking the boundary for perimeter and counting square units for area, recording in notebooks, then moving to formulas. Ends with a question distinguishing the two. Avoid giving formulas first and using the ground only as an afterthought.

  2. Remedial teaching

A Class 8 student has changed schools four times in five years because of the parent's postings and has gaps in Science. How would you identify and fill them?

    What a strong answer covers

A short diagnostic based on earlier-class concepts, conversation with the student, a remedial worksheet plan, peer support and regular checks. Mentions cooperation with parents and a positive, non-judgemental approach. Avoid assuming the student is weak or that gaps will close on their own.

  3. Classroom management

How would you run a Class 7 English lesson that gets every student to speak, including shy children who joined only last month?

    What a strong answer covers

Pair work and small groups, role plays from the chapter, sentence frames for beginners, think-pair-share before whole-class speaking, and praise for attempts. Mentions seating and buddies for newcomers. Avoid calling on only confident students or forcing a shy child to speak in front of everyone immediately.

  4. Assessment

Explain how you check and give feedback on Class 9 Social Science notebooks so that it improves learning rather than becoming a signature exercise.

    What a strong answer covers

Regular, scheduled checking, specific written comments on map work and answer structure, tracking common errors for whole-class feedback, and asking students to correct and respond. Mentions sustainable workload. Avoid ticking pages without comment or checking only before inspections.

  5. Co-curricular duties

During a Republic Day parade rehearsal, you are in charge of a house contingent of Class 8 students and one child faints in the sun. What do you do?

    What a strong answer covers

Immediate first aid: shade, loosening clothing, water if conscious, calling the school nurse or medical inspection room, informing the Principal and parents, and keeping the rest of the contingent supervised. Afterwards, reviews rehearsal timings and hydration. Avoid continuing the rehearsal before the child is attended to.

  6. Subject depth

As a TGT Sanskrit teacher, how would you connect Sanskrit to students' everyday lives so it does not feel like a subject only for marks?

    What a strong answer covers

Uses mottos of Army regiments and institutions that are in Sanskrit, words shared with Hindi and other languages, simple conversation, shlokas with meanings, and short skits. Assessment includes speaking. Avoid relying on rote memorisation of grammar tables only.

  7. Parent communication

A parent who is a senior officer at the station complains that you gave his son low marks in a Mathematics test. How do you handle the meeting?

    What a strong answer covers

Professional, respectful and evidence-based: shows the answer script and marking scheme, explains errors, proposes an improvement plan, and treats the parent as any other parent regardless of rank. Informs the Principal. Avoid changing marks under pressure or becoming defensive.

  8. Pedagogy

What is experiential learning, and give us one Class 10 Science example you have used or would use?

    What a strong answer covers

Defines it as learning by doing and reflecting, then a specific example such as testing pH of household substances or building a simple circuit, with reflection questions tying the activity to the board syllabus. Avoid giving a definition with no example, or an activity with no learning outcome.

  9. Pedagogy

    बताइए, आप कक्षा 6 में हिंदी व्याकरण में संज्ञा और सर्वनाम को खेल-खेल में कैसे पढ़ाएँगी?

    What a strong answer covers

Activity ideas such as naming objects in the classroom, a game replacing names with pronouns in a short story, flash cards and group quizzes, followed by written practice. Answer fluently in Hindi when asked in Hindi. Avoid only writing definitions and examples from the textbook.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
