How it works in India

What these interviews look like

A viva voce is an oral examination, and in Indian schools, colleges and universities it decides a real share of practical and project marks. In Class 10 and 12 board practicals, the examiner asks about the experiment you performed, your record file and your project. In engineering, lab vivas are held at the end of each lab course, often by an external examiner, and the final-year project viva asks you to defend what your team built. Pharmacy, nursing, MBBS and physiotherapy students face practical and clinical vivas through their courses, and research students defend their thesis before an examiner or committee.

Examiners test understanding, not recall. In a physics practical they will ask why you took multiple readings or what the main source of error was. In a programming lab viva they will ask you to trace your code or explain the time complexity. In a project viva they want to know what you personally did, why you chose that approach and what its limitations are. Clinical vivas move from a case to the underlying mechanism and the next step in management. Nervous candidates often know the answer but lose marks by guessing, rambling or freezing.

Prepare by going back to the aim, principle and precautions of every experiment, and by explaining your project to someone who did not build it. Practise saying "I am not sure, but I think" and reasoning aloud, which examiners usually respect more than a confident guess.

ExamPilot’s AI examiner runs vivas for school practicals in science, commerce and humanities, engineering labs across CS, IT, electronics, electrical, mechanical and civil, final-year projects, pharmacy, nursing, MBBS and physiotherapy, and thesis defence.

Health Science & Research Vivas — Pharmacy, Nursing, MBBS, Physiotherapy, Thesis Defence

Oral examinations that decide a grade or a degree: the university practical and theory vivas in B.Pharm and D.Pharm, GNM and BSc Nursing, first- and second-professional MBBS and BPT, and the final defence of a PhD thesis or an M.Tech, MPhil or MSc dissertation. Practise answering an external examiner who probes mechanisms, classifications, procedures, your record book and your own research, and who notices when you bluff.

Viva Voce & Oral Exams

Class 12 and Class 10 practical and project viva voce (CBSE, ISC, state boards)

The viva voce that follows the board practical or accompanies the project: an external examiner asks you about the experiment you performed, the principle behind it, your readings and precautions, and your record file or investigatory project. Practise with a strict but fair examiner across Class 12 science, commerce and humanities practicals and Class 10 science, maths lab and skill-subject practicals.

FAQ

Common questions

What questions are asked in a Class 12 practical viva?

Questions on the aim, principle and procedure of the experiments you performed, sources of error and precautions, the readings in your record file, and your investigatory project — why you chose it and what you found.

How do I prepare for an engineering lab viva?

Revise the theory behind each experiment or program, be able to explain your own code or circuit line by line, know the expected output and why it might differ, and prepare for one or two questions that extend the experiment.

What happens in a final-year project viva?

You present the project and the examiners question each team member on the problem, design choices, their individual contribution, testing, results and limitations. They often ask what you would do with more time.
