How it works in India

What these interviews look like

Faculty recruitment in Indian universities and colleges is done by a selection committee. For assistant professor posts the committee typically includes the head of the institution or a nominee, the head of department, subject experts from outside and other members set by the university’s statutes and UGC regulations. Many institutions now add a presentation or demo lecture, and some shortlist using an academic score built from your degrees, NET or PhD and publications. PhD admission interviews at universities, IITs and research institutes are usually run by a departmental committee after a written test or on NET or GATE scores, while project fellowships and JRF positions are selected by the principal investigator and a small panel.

Committees look for three things. First, depth in your subject: expect to explain a core concept from first principles and then defend it under questioning. Second, research: what your thesis or proposal asks, why it matters, how you will do it, and what you have published. Third, teaching: how you would make a difficult topic clear to undergraduates, handle a mixed-ability class and assess learning. For PhD interviews, the committee wants to see that you have read around your proposed area and can say what you do not yet know.

Prepare a crisp two-minute summary of your research and a ten-minute lecture on a core topic. Re-read your own papers and thesis, because the committee will. Have a clear answer about your teaching philosophy and one example of it in practice.

ExamPilot’s AI selection committee runs assistant professor interviews in engineering, science, humanities and social sciences, and commerce and management, as well as PhD admission and JRF or project-fellow interviews.

FAQ

Common questions

What questions are asked in an assistant professor interview?

An introduction, questions on core topics in your subject, your PhD or research work and publications, your research plans, how you would teach a particular topic, classroom and evaluation scenarios, and your contribution beyond teaching. A demo lecture is common.

How should I prepare for a PhD interview?

Know your research proposal thoroughly — the question, why it matters, the method and what has been done before. Revise the fundamentals of your field, read recent papers from the department, and be honest about what you still need to learn.

Can I practise a demo lecture?

Yes. The academia tracks include teaching-focused rounds where the committee asks you to explain a topic as you would to students and then questions you on it.
